Comparing the Acoustic Character of Diphthong Production between Flaccid Dysarthria and Spastic Dysarthria
Byeon Hae-Won

Abstract
Background & Objectives: Diphthong is accomplished with a fast connection glide and vowel. It is difficult to assess the type of error and position using only the auditory-perceptual evaluation. The purpose of this study is to analyze the acoustic phonetic characteristics of the Korean diphthongs /ja/, /wi/, and /?/ in a word reading assignment between patients with dysarthria (flaccid, two; spastic, four; average age, 58 years) and normal patients (N=10, average age, 57 years).

Methods: Using the computer program ¡°Kalvin (2004),¡± test words consisting of /h +¡®diphthong¡¯ + da/ were shown on a computer monitor. Recorded diphthongs were divided into four sections, and the average formants of each moment were analyzed using ¡®Praat¡¯ (version 4.6.06). The results of this study are described below.

Results: First, as a result of analyzing /ja/, changes in the position of a tongue were observed in the spastic dysarthria group, and backing appeared when a diphthong was pronounced. A longer transition time of diphthongs was observed in the flaccid dysarthria group compared to that of the normal group. Second, from the results of analyzing /wi/, more backing was observed in the dysrthria group than in the normal group while the position of the tongue was tuned. Third, as a result of analyzing /?i/, while the levels of the openness of the jaw in the normal group were pronounced in the form of /i/, a single vowel, it can be estimated that /?i/, a diphthong that changes according to the levels of the openness of the tongue was tuned in the flaccid dysarthria group.

Discussion & Conclusion: These results can be used to understand for vowel of dysarthric speech.
